Chemical Bonds-energy level and stability of splitting atoms

What happens to the energy level and stability of two bonded atoms when they are separated and become two individual atoms?

Energy has to be provided to break bonds so according to the law of conservation of energy, the atoms should have this extra energy - and this will decrease stability. (Bond breaking is endothermic, bond making is exothermic)
