hey

Temperature  is a measure of "hotness".A hot object placed next to a cold one becomes cooler, while the cold object becomes hotter. Heat energy passes from a hot object to a cold one , and the quantity of heat passed between the objects depends on the difference in temperature between the two .

Temperature scales

Fahrenheit temperature scale was made by Gabriel Fahrenheit .The unit of temperature of Fahrenheit scale is 0F .

Celcius temperature scale was gradually accepted by scientists for temperature measurements.This scale was more compatable with the spirit of the metric system. Unit of temperature of celcius scale is  0C.

Kelvin temperature scale     a third scale is a part of  International system of Units.The SI scale used to measure temperature is the Kelvin scale.The unit of temperature of Kelvin scale is (K).

Absolute zero is the difference between the kelvin and the celcius scales which is also called zero point and is equal to -273.15 0C .

Water freezes at 273 K, 00C  and 32 0 F . Room temperature is about 293 K, 0 0C , 68 0F . Boiling point of water is 373 K , 100 0C, 32 0F .

Celcius to Farhenheit conversion :

We have derived a formula to convert degree Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit.

                      0F = ( 1.8 X  0C) + 32

Farhenheit to celcius conversion :

A Celcius  degree is 1.8 times larger than a Fahrenheit degree.

                       0C =  0F -32 / 1.8

Kelvin to Celcius conversion :

                 K = 0C  + 273.15

 Here are the few examples:

Convert 40.00 0C  into K and 0F

Conversion from K to 0C

Given : 40.00 0C  , Find : K

Find the equation that relates the given quantity to the quantity you want to find.

Equation : K = 0C + 273.15

                K = 40.00 + 273.15

                K = 313.15 K

Conversion from 0C to 0F

Given : 40.00 0C   ,    Find : 0F

Find the equation that relates the given quantity to the quantity you want to find

equation :  0C  = (0F  - 32 )/ 1.8

Solve the equation for the quantity you want to find

1.8 x  0C  = (0F  - 32 )

1.8 x  0C + 32  = 0F

substitue and compute

1.8 x  40.00 0C + 32  =  0F

 0F  = 104.00

Some times you may need to do chain conversions i.e conversion from one unit to other then from other unit to third one.Let's take a look at an example of this type.

Convert 0.0 0F to Kelvin.

Look at the step by step procedure to solve this.

  • First sort the information given in the problem.

Given : 0.0 0F   and Find : kelvin

  • Develop the strategy :

Make a conceptual plan  :  0F  => 0C => K

equations :  0C  = (0F  - 32 )/ 1.8   and   K = 0C + 273.15

  • Follow the conceptual plan and solve the problem

0C  = ( 0.0 0F - 32 ) / 1.8 = -17.8 0C

 K  = 0C + 273.15  = -17.8 0C + 273.15  = 255.37

    = 255 K

  • check : units and magnitude make sense .
