A substance is a crystalline solid, melting at 318oC, is white, odorless, tasteless caustic astringent (similar to the perceived taste when eating green banana), has density 2.13 g/cm3 at room temperature, conducts electric current in the molten state and in aqueous solution. Of the above properties which use to identify the lye?

As the substance is crystalline and conducts electricity when molten or in solution, the substance must be an ionic compounds. Acids that are ionic in solution would conduct electriclty but would not form crystalline solids. Also they would not conduct when molten. So this is more likely to be an alkaline substance - I think lye refers to an alkaline solution but I am not too familiar with the term. Have a look at the melting point of NaOH

Most of the other properties such as being white, odourless are correct but never tasted it!!
