For acids and bases which are monobasic/monoprotic such as HCl, NaOH the equivalent weight is the same as the molar mass (formula weight in grams) eg a 1M solution is also 1N (normal)
For acids and bases which are dibasic/diprotic such as H2SO4, Ca(OH)2 the equivalent weight is half of the molar mass (formula weight in grams) eg a 1M solution is 2.0N (normal)
For oxidation and reduction, the equivalent weight is related to the electrons (MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- ---> Mn2+ + 4H2O) the equivalent weight is 1/5 of the molar mass (formula weight in grams) eg a 1M solution is 5N (normal). So 1/5th of the molar mass of KMnO4 dissolved in water and made up to 1L would be a 0.2M but 1N as each mole contains the equivalent of 5 moles of electrons
