# Conversion help for the energy values of food in calories to kilojoules

In Europe nutritional information is given in kJ instead of nutritional calories (1 nutritional calorie= 1 kcal). A packet of soup has the following nutritional information:

250 mL of soup= 235 kJ

How would that same packet be labeled in the United States if the information has to be given in nutritional calories per cup? (There are 4.18 joules in one calorie and 2 cups to a pint)

Okay now I don't need the answer. I have it. Our prof. gave it to us. I just need to know how to do this. I don't know where to start!

This is how I was going to do it:

kJ--> mL

mL-->pints

pints-->cups

but the thing is..in the answer it is in kcal/cup.

so kcal plays an important role.

i just need to know how to get started.

thank you!

If 1 cal = 4.18 J then 1kcal = 4.18 kJ

also 1 cup = 236.5882 mL

with that in mind set it up as follows

235 kJ 1 kcal 236.59 ml

------- x ------- x ---------- =

250 ml 4.18 kJ 1 cup

kJ and mL cancel leaving you with kcal on top and cup on the bottom
